Although I’m aware that every autist is different and unique, this training means that I have a good general understanding of neurodivergence, the ways in which an autist might view, experience and interact with the world differently, and that I can appreciate and support with the unique challenges and difficulties that an autist might face. Such as masking, anxiety, sensory overload, shutdowns and burnout.

How I Work

I work within a Humanistic Integrative Approach, which is primarily based on Person Centered Theory, and uses elements of Gestalt Theory and Transactional Analysis. Essentially, this means that I can tailor our counselling to suit your needs.

The Humanistic Approach is about self-discovery and helping you to achieve your full potential as a human being, rather than only concentrating on individual problems. It looks at everything that makes you who you are and focuses on you as a unique individual, and we can work on the issues that you want to explore.

For example, we could work together to make connections, recognise patterns, increase your awareness and understanding of yourself, as well as your relationships to others and the world around you. We can also work on developing coping strategies and greater self-acceptance. Ultimately, I aim to help you to find your own answers and to make decisions, choices and changes that align with your values and beliefs. You can find out more about a Humanistic Approach here.

Online & Telephone Counselling

Online video or telephone counselling is a way for you to engage in counselling using internet technology such as Zoom or via a regular telephone call, at a time and place that suits your needs. I have completed a Certificate in Online and Telephone Counselling and am able to work with clients who are 18+ and living within the UK. I’m a member of the Association for Counselling and Therapy Online (ACTO), and adhere to the ACTO Professional Conduct and Code of Ethics as well as the BACP Ethical Framework and Good Practice for online and telephone counselling.

Online video and telephone counselling offers certain benefits but there are also limitations that are worth bearing in mind when deciding which type of counselling will best suit your needs.

How does it work?

Online video counselling would take place within a secure, encrypted online meeting room via Zoom. This can be from your computer or phone, and requires use of a webcam/camera. I will provide you the link that you can use to join the meeting, once you’ve clicked the link you will be added to a waiting area and I will let you into the room at our pre-agreed session time.

Telephone counselling can be via a regular phone call, and is a great option to engage in counselling without the visual element of seeing each other. A phone call will be held at a pre-arranged time, and we can discuss if you would prefer for me to call you, or you to call me. As an alternative, if you wish you can choose to only work with audio through Zoom and no video camera would be needed.

Benefits

  • Access to counselling can be more immediate, accessible and at a time that suits you.
  • There is flexibility to choose the method that you feel is best for your preferences.
  • I use Zoom for online video counselling which is a secure online platform that offers confidentiality and peace of mind.
  • There is no chance that you may be seen entering my physical counselling premises by someone else.
  • Online video counselling gives you more of the visual benefits that you get from face-to-face counselling but with the convenience of being in your own space and environment.
  • Telephone Counselling can also be from the comfort of your own space and environment, and mean that you will not be visually seen by me if you would prefer this.

Some things to consider

  • Would you prefer to have counselling face to face?
  • Are you comfortable using internet/digital technology?
  • Telephone counselling has no body language or nonverbal cues to read, which could lead to misunderstanding.
  • Online video and telephone counselling might not be suitable for your needs.
  • Is there a computer that you can use privately without interruption?
  • Do you have a private space where you will not be overheard?

Crisis Information

Counselling is not sufficient support if you feel you are in crisis. Signs of crisis may be feelings or thoughts about ending your life, or harming yourself or someone else. If you feel you are in crisis and would like to talk to someone, you can seek advice from your GP or call 111.

If you need urgent support, you can call 999 or go to the nearest hospital’s accident and emergency department and ask for help. You can also call Samaritans on 116 123, who offer support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, or you can text SHOUT to 85258 who are a 24/7 text messaging service for anyone who is struggling to cope (UK-wide).

FAQs

What is counselling and how can it help me?

Counselling is a talking therapy, which takes place in a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore and process your thoughts, feelings and experiences.

Counselling can help to make connections, recognize patterns, increase your awareness and understanding of yourself, as well as your relationships to others and the world around you. It can also help to develop coping strategies and greater self-acceptance. Ultimately, as your counsellor, my aim is to help you to find your own answers and to make decisions, choices and changes that align with your values and beliefs.

Do you follow a code of ethics?

I’m a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I work within the BACP Ethical Framework and good practice, with your best interests at the heart of our work together. As part of my ethical commitment, I am required to upkeep continued professional development and attend regular Counselling Supervision. This is to ensure that I’m working ethically, safely and effectively.

What is Supervision?

I have regular Supervision with a qualified Supervisor, which involves discussing and reflecting on my process, theoretical understanding and approach to supporting my clients with what they have brought to counselling. Therefore, this involves discussing some of the content of our sessions. However, no personally identifiable information such as your name is used, and Supervision follows the same procedures for confidentiality as counselling.

Is Counselling confidential?

For sessions, I use a secure, encrypted online meeting room provider, or a regular telephone call. I use a secure and encrypted email provider for email communication. The content of our counselling sessions is confidential apart from in the following exceptions:

  • Risk of serious harm. I may need to break confidentiality and speak to relevant agencies or services if I’m concerned that you or someone else is at risk of serious harm. Where possible, I would aim to explore this with you first, however, I may need to prioritise safety and risk of harm.
  • Legal requirements. I’m legally required to break confidentiality if information is disclosed about involvement in or knowledge of an act of terrorism, money laundering or drug trafficking. I have a legal requirement to report concerns of harm or abuse to a minor or vulnerable adult. I'm also legally required to release notes upon court order from a judge.
  • Clinical Supervision. Supervision involves exploring and reflecting on my client work with a qualified counselling supervisor, this involves discussing some of the content of our sessions. Supervision is anonymised and follows the same procedures for confidentiality as I've outlined.
  • Accounting purposes. It may be necessary to provide my accounting information to official organisations (e.g. accountancy firms, banks, HMRC) which may disclose a record of your name and payment to me.

Is my information kept safe?

Your personal information is kept safely, securely and confidentially, either stored in locked cabinet or password encrypted on a computer. You can find out more about this in my privacy policy here. Email correspondence is encouraged through a secure mail server.

Will there be a formal contract?

I provide a contract that outlines the framework of our work together. Once we’ve discussed and explored this together, and you have read, understand and agree the terms explained, I will ask you to sign the contract to show that you agree to these terms and consent for counselling sessions to begin.

How many sessions will I have?

Ultimately, I will be led by you, however we can either work to an agreed short-term number of sessions, or long-term ongoing counselling, going at your pace and ending counselling when you’re ready.

How do I start counselling?

To arrange to start counselling, please fill out the secure web form at the bottom of the page. Please note that I aim to respond to queries within 24 hours.

What will happen in our initial consultation?

I understand that it’s important that you find a counsellor who is the right fit for you, so I offer a free, no obligation, online video or telephone consultation. In this, we can explore what's brought you to counselling, go through any questions that you might have, discuss how I might be able to support you and any reasonable adjustments that you might find helpful.

What will happen in our first session?

Session one is a bit different from the other sessions that follow. Its useful for me to get a bit more of an overview of your life, what has brought you to counselling and what you would like to focus on. Therefore, in our first session, I may be asking more questions than usual, and about specific things. There’s no pressure, and it’s just a chance for me to get to know you better. Otherwise, our counselling sessions are your time to use as you want, whether that be exploring the same topic each week, or whatever you feel like talking about on the day.
